V/A - Funky Breaks EP

A German label with international roster. Four tracks: two producers, two remixes. Those ones who like mid-tempo paced yet vivid and energetic funk-break tracks, will also be keen on the collaborations of this release. For example, despite the floor killer bass-line of the original of the song of Infamous called Strike3, in my opinion the Jayl Funk remix of it is much more interesting: just like the 4/4 side of break-beat, so can the 4/4 face of funk-break also be happy and smiy. And this is the smile that Jayl Funk has made out of Strike3. And this is what he's done with his own song called Monkey Phonk, of which, however, the remix of Luc is even happier and funnier: slightly swinging crispy grooves are paired with phat bass-lines and jazzy piano. So, we’ve got four dance-floor hits over here; the rest is up to you.

Napz - Inner Vibes EP

Napz has been known for his rare and limited edition vinyl discs composed together with Malestrom and released on small and independent labels. Apart from a few, these superb cuts were dancefloor filler pieces of art. This EP now goes for the ones sitting at home. There are four beautiful crystal clear songs swimming in the ocean of ideas: just like that, while listening to the saxophone runs of One Way, we can feel like sitting in a smokey jazz-bar where from we get flown far away due to the keyboard FX’s and clarinet blends of All The Time. Meanwhile, the female vocal of Inner Vibes puts us out of reality - in case you like it in general. And if you’re not into that sort of things then hold on tight for the high-hat rhythm of Sur La Lune following its pace. Nevertheless, all that musicality mentioned above is packed into a groove based, phat bass sounding environment that everyone will nod head for. So do you!

TM Juke & Jack Baker Trio - Boto And The Second Liners

Fortunately, it seems TM Juke is never out of ideas. Besides his own colorful musical workmanship, he’s been recently presenting his thoughts through musical notes alongside Robert Luis composing proper eclectic electronica under then name Me & You. Just to dot the i’s and cross the t’s, he has made a new LP with Jake Baker trio in a period of two months leading us through by through to the fields of blood-pressure pumping rhythms from the American continent. The carnival alike mood is provided by the sampling free, solely live instrumentally recorded sound that is injected with the elements and influences of hip-hop, latin samba, funk and lots of other nasty rhythms. And to the top of this, guest vocalists of Bellercuhe and Gecko Turner, or like Alice Russel guarantees the total satisfaction. Not only does it seems like good stuff, it is good stuff.

Onur Engin - Be Still My Soul

If you describe yourself as a person who like to listen to hip-hop music the you’ll have fun while listening to this release - nevertheless it’s got nearly nothing to do with hip-hop in traditional way. On the other hand, perhaps, this EP is a bit strong in one take, yet will find its way to open minded people. All three of the remixes have mainly remained true to the pace and structure of the original, which one is about dusty and dirty grooves and solid drums. The re-work of 1000 Names follows the route of abstract hip-hop by all means. In the reading of Ed Seven we’re going to get a straight and proper head-nodding cut, while Daisuke Tababe’s remix turns towards nu-jazz and to solutions of background music of lounge bars. However, these sentences are far beyond enough to give back the mood of these tracks. I suggest that everyone should go and give’em a listen.

Lizzy Parks - Raise The Roof

The ones who are after tough grooves won’t feel this single as theirs. So do the ones who miss the sound of phat drums in general. This disc belongs to those ones who love to listen to sophisticated, live jazz with enormous emphasis on the lyrical content. Just like in the two versions of the title song, the meaning of the vocals are also deeply integrated part of the only digital released 6 minutes long epic called Prayer. The way melodies of instruments follow the melodies of vocals goes to proove this integration. Just like the way - instead of listening to the beautiful violin play, or to the fascinating trumpet, or to the nice piano - you can catch yourself paying attention to the message of Lizzy Parks on the importance of smiling, fighting againt keeping distance and the necessity of being open-minded.

Hot 8 Brass Band - Remixes

Perhaps, it's not a big mistake to say that recently this is one of the most dance-floor oriented release of the Brighton based label. There are dirty-funk-breaks, tight party hip-hops or dynamic mid-tempo grooves among the remixes made by mostly TruThoughts' artists. The fact that the tracks Get Up and It's Real are contributed in more versions won't bother anybody. But the fact that this is an only digital release will. It's really pity: the re-works of the New Orleans based brass band are just light in the night. Melodies of trumpets, horns, tubas and bugles matched with proper beats. This is vivid and sparkling an album. It surely would spark at much more places if it wasn't for downloading solely.

Belleruche - Anything You Want (Not That)

You won’t find anything considerably break-through on the latest single of the british posse Belleruche who had the turntablism married to blues quite successfully. Simply, what you’ll find is joy. As being a 7” single, it has two tracks all together, but then you’ll find yourself flipping the disc over and over again like one just can’t get enough. The title song is a mid-tempo dancefloor hit suspect. Perhaps, it’s too slow a little bit to reign Europe, but its happy melodies and vibes will do the job at many clubs. The other song is called Don’t Let Them Push You Around, released solely on this single and, if possible, is just even more interesting than the title. Kate’s voice is more undeniable than ever, especially in this musical environment: electro blues or folk hip-hop - everybody shall decide on one’s own.

V/A - It Becomes Infectious

[Inc]

Somehow it has become an average standard during the years that the continuous mix-CD’s are tracked, so that you can step forward or backward each song. This Parisian label with its CD including their tracks and remixes mostly doesn’t give a shit to this habit. There will only be a 74 minutes long audio track in the Hi-Fi, if we start to play the album. This is quite a unique way to communicate an attitude that reflects on making the audience listen to the music from the very beginning to the very end. The music itself is unique as well as that approach. I think melting the songs into each other wasn’t the main aim either; nevertheless the mixes are precise and properly timed, but are artificially made to be comfortably recognizable. This creates an interesting mood next to the interesting songs: fat hop beats, dirty bass, urban grooves, electric-nu-disko, funk-pop, glitch – I don’t really have a clue what would be the best words to describe this music to someone who hasn’t heard it. This is a real big-city hybrid; each and everyone could find something in it. I think it could be used perfectly for big chats among friends talking through each other. Definitely worths going after it and getting it!

Deela - Manomano

Although, this album came out last autumn, I feel it’s necessary to drive people’s attention to it – furthermore, it still can be bought in the shops. So, what we’ve got here is, not only do Ingo Möll and Martin Morsch move through the boundaries of many genres and being familiar with the mixture of styles, but they’re also capable of composing songs that reflect wide scale of emotions in their listeners. Nostalgic, catchy, uplifting, melancholic, fascinating: be it wicked-breakz like For What You Are, or be it raggie like Power Gone, or nu-jazz like Local Deela, or melody-breaks like All There Is and Take It Slow, they all have got that emotional overload that makes the duo of Deela different than their contemporaries. And I haven’t even mentioned their capacity. It’s hard to find such creative musicians recently: they compose better and better music like it was raining cats and dogs. Thus, everyone who likes music that has effect on its listeners should pay attention to them in the future.

Előrebocsátom, hogy nem fogok tudni elfogulatlanul nyilatkozni erről a lemezről. Bár, arról is meg vagyok győződve, hogy néhányan úgy éreznek majd ezzel a dupla albummal, ahogy én általában a levesekkel: nem feltétlenül ízlik, de nagyon jól esik. Ebben a felgyorsult tempójú világban, ahol bárki bármikor, percek alatt letölt magának egy számot innen – egyet onnan, egyik percben egy ilyen net-radiot hallgat – a másikban egy olyat, egy album véghallgatása megköveteli a türelmet és a tiszteletet. Akár, egy jó tányér leves. Üljünk le hát szépen, és nyugodtan együk meg az egészet, az utolsó cseppig. Mert, amit Papp Ferenc, Séfel Pál és Pejkó Balázs ezen a dupla lemezen kínál, azt valóban az utolsó cseppjéig ki kell élvezni; és még meg sem fekszi majd a gyomrunkat...
Már a borítóra vetett elso pillantás után, az album kézbevételekor feltunik az egyszeruségében rejlo nagyszerusége, a szemrevaló, papír tokos dupla-CD borítójának letisztultsága. Ez a letisztultság, a sallangoktól mentes perfekcionizmusra való törekvés természetesen a zenében is jelen van. Sok szerzo esik ugyanis abba a hibába, hogy különbözo okokból kifolyólag nem – néha még több lemez után sem – frissít a hangminta-készleten, vagy analóg módszerek esetében, a hangszerelésen: ugyanazt a pergot halljuk végig az egész albumon; vagy például, akár milyen kövér is a basszus, nincs az a karakterisztika, ami nem kezdené ki bárki figyelmét 50 percnyi azonos megszólalás után. Itt, ennek nyoma sincs! Ahány szám, annyi hangzás! (Nem is beszélve a hangszerekrol.) Viszont minden egyes szám, a már említett letisztultság jegyében született – pont úgy szól, ahogy épp kell. Számomra pont ebben a letisztultságban rejlik a Membran nagyszerusége. A Cabaret Card gyönyöruen tiszta akusztikus dob megszólalásához remekül passzolnak a tökéletesen hozzá illo nagyvárosi bár zongora és gitár jazz-témázgatásai; a Dubious veszett dub-step lüktetését a koszos jungle cintányérok teszik teljes, kerek egésszé; a Delay – The Ladies’ Stlye levegos basszusa mellett egyértelmuen foglal helyet az éteri szintetizátor, a könnyedén tekergo groove és a visszhangos, mintázott férfi vokál; Dynamite MC hangja üzemanyagként táplálja a One Way motorját, mely így eros egységként összekovácsolódva repíti az égbe ezt harapós basszusú és daráló lendületu future hip-hop rakétát; a The Are Things egyszeruen nagyszeru hagyományos rap hangzásra pedig úgy van lekeverve, ahogy az illik: BluROOM hangjával a középpontban, miközben az nem megy a zene rovására; lábdob, basszus, pergo, mind szépen élvezhető.
Ezen túl, az összes számról külön-külön lehetne még mit írni, de én itt befejeztem a felsorolást. A rejtett kis apróságokat, a finomra hangolt nüánsznyi részleteket mindenki fedezze fel magának! Végre bárki megteheti! "feszínén a membran" - A Closed, 10 év állhatatos munkáját felölelo dupla-korongján szereplo 29 idotálló szám végre kereskedelmi forgalomba került...

V/A - Fantastic Freeriding Remixed

Emlékeztek még arra az érzése, amikor a legkülönfélébb számokkal otthon telemásolt, semmihez sem fogható hangulatú vegyes kazettákat hallgattuk? Szerves egységként nem lehetet rájuk tekinteni, de mégis, a legtöbb darab hihetetlenül egyéni hangvételure sikerdett, mivel gyakorlatilag készítojük egy adott pillantbeli hangulatát közvetítették. Hasonló érzéseket tapasztaltam, miközben ezt a válogatás lemezt hallgattam. Olyan volt, mintha egy jobb, de tökéletesen vegyes zenét sugárzó rádió-adót hallgatnék valamelyik délután – funk-break, hip-hop, world-music, uptempo; szépen, egymás után kis szünetekkel a dalok között, miközben, valójában ez a korong a kiadó jelen pillanatnyi ’hangulatát’ mutatja be, a Fantastic Freeriding válogatás-sorozat eloadóinak számaiból készített feldolgozásokon keresztül. Ancient Astronauts, Fort Knox Five, Bobby Hughes Combination, All Good Funk Alliance – csak, hogy megemlítsek pár arcot abból a nemzetközi gárdából, akik ráteték a kezüket a német fiúk munkáira. Összességében nézve, ez a lemez bármikor kellemes percek forrása: vegyes, változatos, szellos és kötetlen hangvételu.

Eddy Meets Yannah - Once In A While

Ez a lemez tele van új megoldásokkal. A Compost kiadónál megjelent bemutatkozó albumával, a horvát duó sikeresen hű marad a német kiadó minoségi és újító törekvésekkel szimpatizáló vonalához. Kellemesen elektrónikus elegyet hallhatunk tolük okos broken beat, könnyed bár zene, újraértelmezett garage és még számos almufaj mérsékelt állagából. Ám óvatosan kell bánni ezzel a bugyborékoló koktéllal. Megfekheti az ember gyomrát, ha nem megfeleloen van adagolva. Megfelelo figyelemmel! Errol a szükséges figyelemrol, legutóbb a 15. Szigeten gyozodhetett meg a magyar közönség, a Medúza helyszínén. Az agyafurt dallamok, a csípos basszusok és a trükkös ritmusok ott is megtették a magukét: aki ott volt, az sokáig emlékezni fog rá – akárcsak magára a lemezre. Yannah Valdevit magával ragadó hangja, és Eddy Ramich kiszámíthatatlan hangmintái markánsan olvadnak bele mindennapjaink bármelyik pillanatába – no persze, csak ha probléma- helyett, megoldás-kereso típusok vagyunk.

Slow, dynamic, smooth and catchy – this album includes anything that has come to mind to our singing bird. And it includes all of that in such a colorful and creative way that any humming bird would fall greedy for it. The best example would be the song called Hamble Por Favor where such wicked horns appears solely in the last half minute that any of his contemporaries would build a new, whole song only around that. But our multi-instrumentalist skylark flies with the wind, you can't catch him and put him in cage. But I don't have a clue wheter recording Spanish lyrics only was for the purpose of humor. However it works pretty much.

Fans of disco and soul; forward march! This is your album. It doesn't even come to a halt until house music. But then, what am I talking about? Well, just like anywhere else in this detailed world, borders dissappearing, and the conclusion's become the mixture of things melted into each other. The double album of these two spanish guys – appereantly named to 2 Faces – is the typical instance of transforming feelings born under the influence of globalisation into musical forms. Listening to their album, have been recorded in Spain and Brasil, one can continously catch the traces of using big city's slow-vivid and busy-empty harmonies. And this useage is pure quality.

Mo' Horizons - Sunshine Today

Summer has passed on. But you'll fell summer-time again, anytime, if you listen to this album. Not only is it summer, it's hot cuban summer, sweaty african summer, sun burn puerto rican summer, sultry portugee summer. Ofcourse comfortable summer; with light breeze of wind and a catch of fresh and soft air. Perhaps it's like this, the LP - with 16 guest musician – not having the useage of complicated music-theory phases, as each song is actually a folk-song. A folk-song in their own country. The bravehearts of nu-jazz could easly play at each festival's world music stage with this album – no one would feel cheated.

Me & You - Floating Heavy

There are no one else behind the name of this duo than the head of Tru Thoughts label and TM Juke himself who have really mannaged to ride the flow with this album. And they drive this flow through over the whole LP while introducing plenty of music styles meanwhile. The song Hoop Loop is the happiest nu-funk song ever. The reggae cover of Roni Size's Brown Papper Bag is an all time memory aswell. The drum'n'bass and cuban alike hip-hop version – fetured at the end - of the song called Last Heads also will be a long remberd moment for the first time listeners. So does the rhythm changer ZeZam.

Even those ones who are familiar with Tru Thoughts label and their music, couldn't have really meet with the band of Belleruche around them before. Their music is that sort of „hip-hop blues soul, like Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Christian and Cut Chemist stuck in a dusty second hand record store with wine and a sampler". I would add Herbaliser to this list for the dynamism, however, the tree members of Belleruche – performing vocal, guitar and turntables - don't operate with funk. Despite of that, Minor Swing and Bird Mess wouldn't stand out of line at any hip-hop party by any means.

I have rarely listened to downtempo music at home recently during my empty minutes - just so for my own pleasure. Being a DJ, I've come across a few albums that ruled the place in my head for days but it was Morcheeba's Big Calm that had exploded into my life like this album, leaving no place of the will for other music. Wonderfull atmospheric melodies, gently floating instruments and creamy rhythms guarantee the untouchable calm that is left behind in the listener. The two authors are Monophonic and Whizcutz – I kindly ask you to remember their name!

And here you are! At least, an entire album of funk-breaks from one band only is released. After the fastly coming and going funk-break and nu-funk singles, these artists are about to dig deep in the genre and approach each aspect of this style. They've played airy guitars and keys over the phat beats of hip-hop pieces. The 4/4, housy, framed tracks have been perfectly injected with broken vibes. Sometimes it's the bass, sometimes it's the horns that play the role. All of the tracks are masterpieces of funk's new era. Get this album while you can.

Black Label series have always been different to other releases of Compost Records . With this release now, that sums up of the series’ latest parts on this CD, they step back to the shadowy corners of dance-floors to bring the possibilities of the triangle of electro, house and techo to the front. And yes, they’ve worked very well. Bass-lines wobbling sombrely and monotonic approaches rule the 6-8 minutes long tracks. The usage of psychedellic elements at times are quite interesting, however not making the compilation to be able for home-listening.

Kellemesen könnyed hangvételt kapott ez a disco válogatás, kényelmes tempóval felruházva. Pont olyannal, mint amilyet az ember nyaraláskor, a vízparton diktál. Ennek ellenére, a dalszövegek helyenként komoly erkölcsi okfejtésekbe csúsznak át, ám ezek pozitív kicsengéssel hatnak; bírálatoknak nyoma sincs. Nem is passzolnának a neon-fények lüktetésére szinkopázó, rózsaszínben játszó, pukkanó buborékokra emlékeztetö dallamvilághoz. Bár lehet, hogy csak én érzek így ezzel a gyermekkorunk kedvenc dalaira és hangjara emlékeztetö koronggal, és közben az akoltók ujjal mutogatnak rám a múltból.

Ben Mono utánozhatatlan; és rendkívül figyelmes. Az album intro-jában megkapjuk a figyelmeztetést, hogy ha folytatjuk a hallgatást nem biztos, hogy olyat kapunk, amire számíthatunk. Igaza van, erre a lemezre tényleg nem lehet felkészülni! Stílusteremtö; csak az irányzatnak nincs még neve. Ízekre facsart hangokból és effektekböl, melyek egy szál magukban élvezhetetlenek lennének, szakadozó énekek és dallam darabokból álló alkotásai mégsem öncélúak. Ott bújkál bennünk az az egyedi harmónia, ami végig fenntartja a hallgató figyelmét és érdeklodését. Hard-pop? Euro-grime? Nem találok rá szavakat...

Having sold the Stereo Deluxe records, the main part of the ex-artist posse have moved on and passed by. One of them were the guys from Mo’ Horizons who as for the next step had decided to start with their own label. This label, the one also releases this 8 tracks long LP of The Juju Orchestra, is Agogo Records. I trully belive this album couldn’t have been brought to any other better place. The kings of club-jazz have found the best solution and have become unstoppable. Samba, bossa, latin jazz – anything they put their hands on becomes golden.

Brighton mostanság nem csak Fatboy Slim kiadójától, a Skint-tol, vagy a számos freestyle eloadó bázisától, a Tru Thoughts-tól hangos, hanem egy friss, és lendületes kis label-tol is, a Frequent Soundz-tól. Legújabb kiadványuk, Madár Úr második lemeze, nem más, mint egy izzig-vérig uk hip-hop album, nem sok meglepetéssel, viszont annál megbízhatóbb hangzással és megoldásokkal. A forgatókönyv ismert, mégsem fárasztó. Scrath-ek a megfelelo helyeken. A beat ropog, ahogy kell; a basszus simogat, ahogy illik. Minden a helyén, hogy kellemes 50 percnyi kikapcsolódást szerezzünk magunknak.

Track&Field - Maraton

A finn Nine2Five Recordings sohasem tartozott a hagyományos kiadók közé, és ezzel a 2 CD-s, dupla albummal, újra csak ezt a tényt támasztották alá. R. Rodriguez és J. Kaartinen duójának pár száma ugyan már megjelent korábban a Stereo Deluxe kiadónál is, ám, hogy munkásságuk ennyire termékeny lenne, azt sejteni sem lehetett. Ok a down-tempo koronázatlan királyai és amit kapunk tolük, az valóban zsiger-bizsergeto downbeat. A szó legvegytisztább értelmében. Nem unalmas, nem hajlik a világzene felé, nem gyújt rá füstös hip-hop ütemekre és nem merít ös beat dalokból sem. Csak beloled.

The Juju Orchestra - Bossa Nova Is Not A Crime

A Stereo Deluxe kiadó kiárusítását, majd bekebelezését követoen, az akkori alkotógárda jelentos része tovább állt és új utakat keresett magának. Közéjük tartozott a Mo’Horizons is, akik egy saját kiadó elindítását látták a megfelelo lépésnek. Ez lett, az itt tárgyalt nagylemeznek, a JuJu Orchestra 8 számos alkotásának a kiadója is egyben, az Agogo Records. Hiszem, hogy ez az anyag keresve sem találhatott volna jobb helyet! A club jazz királyai szabad kezet kaptak és megállíthatatlanok lettek. Samba, bossa, latin jazz, bármihez nyúlnak, arannyá válik a kezük alatt.

This is the most diverse part of Tru Thoughts’ Shapes series so far. It has always been colorful a compilation and as the time went by the main route of the series changed with the years but now the selector, Robert Louis has done an excellent job. The crazy latin-break moods belong to the past by now so does the phat and live sound of the funk. There’re pleaseant sea-cost and mediterrian vibes instead with touch of soul, reggae and last but not least the good old extremly unique hip-hop.

A Black Label sorozat darabjai mindig is gyökreresen különböztek a Compost minden más kiadványától. Most, e sorozatot felvonultató újabb válogatás CD megjelnetetésével, hátra húzódnak a táncparkettek árnyékos sarkaiba, hogy elotérbe helyezzék a techo, az electro és a house háromszöge által határolt lehetoségeket. Kivesézik, boncolgatják is a témát rendesen! Sötéten dörmögo basszusok, monoton megközelítések uralkodnak az átlagosan 6-8 perc terjedelmu tételekben. Érdekes a helyenként finom pszichedelkius elemek alkamazása is, ám ettol otthoni hallgatásra nem kimondottan alkalmas.

Kezeket a magasba, a lábak rugóznak, a csipo köröz; itt a funk újkori prédikátorainak legújabb testamentuma. A mindig eloremutató válogatás-sorozatban eddig egyszer sem kellett csalódni és ezúttal is beváltja a hozzá fuzött reményeket. Nyolc sehol nem hallott gyöngyszem és három, eddig csak bakeliten kiadott ritkaság garantálja az eredményt. A hip-hop tételek a nekirugaszkodós, lendületes fajtából valók; a funk számok lehengerloek és dinamikusak, az utolsó szám pedig igazi meglepetés. Ez a 12 nóta senkit sem fog nyugton hagyni, piszokul felborzolja majd a kedéjeket!

This album goes to boozers. It’s facetious, floundering and jocular just like when someone is in one’s cups. Nevertheless, it is a true value, isn’t a party-disc with transient virtue. As a matter of fact, what we have here is a bunch of happy sailor songs suit up in modern sound. Plucky scarthes and pert grooves melt into melodies dictated by accordions while parts like the reggae vocals of ’Kaptajin Bim’ or like the mambo trumpets of ’Fandango’ just raise the mood more and more. If everyone were listening to this music in their cars, the roads would surely have much convival atmosphere.

It’s very hard to find the proper words for the compilations of Compost Records sometimes. They can be so complex, variegated and versatile; having the most diverse genres and moods fetured that one can never know where to start to talk about it. One thing is for sure: the aim of this compilation is to briefly introduce the last year and those 50 releases that had come out during. However, inspite of the briefness of 13 tracks for this, they’ve tried to expand the spectrum with remixes and songs previsuly not released on CD. Techno, Jazz, Down-Beat, Electro – after 250 releases, this label knows which way to go.
